Saturday I had to say good bye to a good friend who'd traveled many miles next to me on his Moto .

Death Valley , All over the Southern California Deserts , mountains and beaches  & back again , always in good humour and with good cheer .

Richard was a wonderful father to one of my close friends and a devoted husband to Norma .

Ha passed suddenly last week , I am glad I took the time to visit with him a scant few days beforehand , we had a nice chat .

RIP Richard , I hope the road rises to you forevermore .

Hansen Dam Ride

This year was the 30th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the Norton Club
running it , it was *FABULOUS* , all manner of bikes showed up if only a few
V.J.L.A.'ers .

One lone black Domestic 196? Honda CB77 305CC Superhawk in VGC ridden by a nice lady , one
white S-90 I somehow missed when parked , puttered by me after most of the other
bikes were gone .

A pristine Suzuki rotary and a pink different model Suzuki in tandem , GB500 ,
early dry sumper , single cammer CB750's , CB500's , CB400F's

Etc. , etc. .

Some really early singles too , a Pierce that was still in the original family ,
it was unrestored although the owner told me he'd taken the engine apart for
overhaul , he was riding it .

More cool Brit. bikes than you could shake a bent pushrod at , a MV Agusta and
Laverdas , lots of Moto Guzzi's although nary a Falcone to be seen .

Quite a few Ariel ' Square Four ' Motos , these are a fairly rare old British bike made before Honda (or anyone else) developed the simple InLine four cylinder Motocycle engine , what Ariel did was to basically build _one_ four cyinder engine out of _two_ vertical twins , this meant having _two_ separate crankshafts so close to-gether they were geared to each other so one rotate _reverse_ from the other one , this made for a very pleasant and smooth power delivery . think " Buick " except on two wheels and with horrible Joseph P. Lucas electrics and you'll get the idea .

One bright spark (?) apparently had waaayyyy too much money and time on his hands and so built a Moto using _two_ Ariel Square Four engines , this resulted in a rectangular eight cylinder Motocycle engine that when goosed , sounded much like a Hot Rodded 1967 Chevy V-8 .

One lonely Ural Combination Rig in a nice green color showed up , it was a newer
750 , I didn't get to meet it's driver .

A couple guys showed up super early as I did (in my 1959 Metropolitan Nash Fixed Head Coupe) and grabbed choice parking spots for their pickup truck then were selling mostly N.O.S. British Moto parts off
the tailgate , I scored a pair of brandy new bar end turn signals for only $20.00 U.S. (less than the value of the lenses) before anyone else spotted them .

You alls missed a fun ride , the route was slightly changed this year due to the closure of the Angeles Forest and Crest Highways .

Next up is the December 31st. morning ride at Burger Continental in Pasadena ,
this New year's eve morning ride is a perennial that's always a hoot with little traffic on the roads .

Next year I plan to be riding The Hansen Dam event , even if only on my Honda 90 .

One year , one month & one day and counting since last I rode (this is tough) .

I'm sitting here in the upstairs office of the shop , it's huge and was built in 1969 , the AC is on the blink so to prevent us from baking to death , I opened the roof hatch and propped all the doors open with old chairs , there's enough breeze that some air is being dragged up the stairs and out the roof .

I'm getting all nostalgic about the slight smell of long overdue for a change , burned Motor Oil wafting past collapsed piston rings and wobbly old pistons when I realize with a jolt ~ that's not supposed to be a smell I get anymore and worse, it actually bad for me....

It's been one full year since I was run over by a taxi , I survived a fatal motocycle accident , it changed my life in ways I never could have guseed .

I hope to once again be astride my Moto (even a Mo-Ped will do) within a year but who knows .

I don't feel overly lucky although I know I am .

Imagine being blinded , this is how important a thing has been forcefully removed from my life .

They say , if I have to explain , you wouldn't understand , maybe that's so , maybe it's just getting the right metaphor for non - Motocyclists to understand .

His books were widely read as he was a  wise , benevolent and compassionate man as well as a gifted teacher who helped so many kids on thier road to life & adulthood .

An old supervisor of mine is dying of acute renal failure , cancer of  both kidneys and liver .

This guy was a real jerk who took pleasure in hassling his underlings , he nearly got me fired for following his *exacting* instructions once then stood up in that final hearing and said " yes but , Nate knows better " ~ this from a guy who gave _orders_ , never requested an action .

Now I hear he's about to go (48 Hrs. says the Dr.) I realize how sad it is that another is passing away .

I've seen way too much death on my time .

Well , now I'll have to meditate about this and my changed attitude towards him.

This is from my brother who shares my views but is a *much* better and more articulate writer .

-Nate

    Dear Family and friends,

I've been having some trouble getting enthusiastic about the press coverage of the shooting at the Holocaust Museum and the shooting of "Neda" in Iran.  A response I received to my last essay on LAprogressive.com helped me understand my feelings.  So I wrote a new essay, which was posted this morning.

    Here's your personal copy:

I was going to try to write something in a humorous voice about how Darth Limbaugh was directing Emperor Cheney’s imperial storm troopers, dressed as Senators Graham and Boehner, out to savage and malign Sonia Sotomayor. I figured that there must be some workable pun in the idea that they can take the white sheet off Graham but they can’t make him any less of a cracker.

But then I got an email response to my essay about empathy. The message was from a proud progressive, who argued that empathy is a uniquely human trait. He went on to say that their lack of empathy showed that Republicans, soldiers, and Cheney in particular could be classified as non-human.

I’m worried. As so much of our political and social discourse encourages the balkanization of our society, what does it mean that thoughtful, caring progressives may be reaching the point of dismissing people with whom they disagree, the same way Republicans, Faux News stars and neo-cons seem to dismiss all non-whites and non-“Christians”?

Are we frustrated, after years of apparent criminal conduct and colonial warfare by our governmental leaders? Are we frustrated, after rejecting Gropenator Schwarzennegger’s right wing ballot measures, to see him (with help from “Democrat” legislators) giving more tax breaks to big business? Are we frustrated as we learn that Barak Obama is really a middle-of-the-road politician, whose actual policy positions do not have the strength of his mighty rhetorical gifts?

Does our frustration justify abandoning thoughtful analysis of complex issues and adopting the right wing’s catch phrases, ad hominem attacks and contempt for facts? Should we, can we, dismiss those with whom we disagree as simply non-human?

The progressive email arrived while I was lamenting the press coverage of the shooting at the Holocaust Museum . The facts of the shooting don’t seem in much doubt. A bigot with a long history of expressing his racism finally tried to go out in a blaze of hateful glory. And, like the plans for glory of so many other hate mongers, including Hitler, his plans failed. Hitler and Pol Pot had to face the judgment of history. This killer will have to face the judgment of a jury of his peers. Like Zsa Zsa Gabor, who wanted, but was denied, other “celebrities” for her police slapping trial, this killer will get a jury of his actual peers, not those he might wish were his peers.

But while the nation fastened its attention on the shooting of a guard in Washington D.C. , the Associated Press was trying to circulate a story about another murder by racists. The story was about a Latino father and his young daughter who were gunned down by right wing, border “militia” gunmen, carrying badges and pretending to be enforcing U.S. sovereignty. The story got no traction.

The father was a legal resident. He was employed. He was doing what the right wing says it wants legal immigrants to do. But he and his daughter are now dead, shot in their home by self proclaimed “patriots”. That’s right, shot in their home, not while working as guards in a public facility. But like the guard, shot because they were “racially inferior” in the eyes of their killers.

Are they also racially inferior in the eyes of all those who believe that a killing by a madman in a famous venue is more important than the killing of a Latino family, in their homes, by an organized group of right wing zealots?

Similar questions gets asked every time a little white girl is kidnapped and murdered. As the news trucks gather and pundits pontificate, a few minority voices cry out asking why we don’t give equal coverage to the regular killing of children of color. And we have to ask it as we see the intense coverage of an attractive Iranian woman, gunned down by the religious secret police for the crime of being where people were demonstrating for democracy.

The murders in Arizona were different from these political murders. The killers were not religious fanatics trying to impose their viewpoint. They were members of “respectable” militia groups. “Respectable” bigots. The accused leader of the kill squad is a woman whose hate writings remained posted on a “respectable” militia website after the murders until the AP started asking about it. Now that she’s been arrested, the “respectable” bigots are trying to run from their association with the killers.

The police in Arizona say the “militia killers” did it for the money. They planned to force their way into a family home and kill all the occupants so they could steal money. The plan was OK to them, because the victims were Latino, not human. They dressed in law enforcement uniforms to gain access to the house. They shot a child so she couldn’t be a witness against them.

Where did they learn to kill little girls in their own homes? Our own Pentagon has refused to punish soldiers who rape and kill Iraqi and Afghani little girls, as long as the rapes and murders are in “combat zones.” These militia killers pretend they are fighting a war against racially inferior Latinos in our country. “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel” said Dr. Johnson in 1775. And so it remains today. This is neocon courage.

Now look what’s happened even here in progressive essay land. I started out lamenting the lack of empathy and press coverage for the Latino victims of racist murderers. But I drifted away from the victims to the more sexy criticism of the racists. Just as the press drifted to the more sexy Holocaust Museum murder and the murder of an Iranian woman by the Ayatolla’s “religious” police.

Is it a lack empathy that we ignore the stream of murders of children of color while waiting for the next Jon Benet or Caylee to weep for? If we lack empathy for the children of color, are we, as my progressive email correspondent would have it, non-human?

I do not believe that the deaths of Jon Benet, Caylee, Stephen Johns or Neda are more newsworthy than the murders of a 9 year old Latino girl and her father by uniformed thugs pretending to be patriots. I also do not believe that young men, who go off to war, trained to believe and obey their leaders have abandoned their humanity.

My progressive correspondent tells me that empathy is a uniquely human trait. But there aren’t many other species that practice organized warfare against themselves. That too may be a uniquely human trait. A complete lack of empathy may indicate mental illness. The suppression of empathy may be just a business judgment. If we start calling businessmen “non-human” we cut a lot of people out of our conversations. And we cut ourselves out of many important conversations.

It is also a uniquely human trait to be introspective and to strive for self improvement. And so Obama acknowledges his ongoing struggle with nicotine addiction. Trying to improve himself and set a good example, while people who fear change mock him for the effort.

How many Latino Families like the one gunned down in Arizona are working to improve themselves? Without press fanfare, they mow our lawns, tend our children and clean our offices at night. And without press fanfare, they die from the violence of racist killers pretending to be “protecting the good people.” They suffer and die while “the liberal media” ignore them and wait for the next Jon Benet.

If Obama can find the discipline to struggle with his nicotine addiction in the public glare of a hostile press, shouldn’t we, in the privacy of our own lives, be able to find the discipline to learn some empathy for the non-white, non-beautiful children who die each year from racist violence, poverty, ignorance, malnutrition and the lack of any meaningful healthcare? Shouldn’t we be able to find the discipline to learn some empathy for the least among us, yes, even for Cheney.

Not quite like Wallace & Grommet but fun nontheless ! .

here's my brother's writeup as he's actually  articulate :

Nate and I drove from L.A. to Perris, CA today to attend the So. Cal. Antique Truck Historical Society's annual meet at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum.  We drove the gasser 1980 Caddy hearse.  The joyous good news was that, even though the carby is still running WAY too rich, on an open road run, the Caddy jumped from 11.59 mpg (last tank) to 12.28 mpg (today's tank).  It's a 6 liter, V8, pushing about 5,000 lbs down the road, mostly at 65-75 mph.  Boy this things needs a Duramax conversion!

Even more, it needs the AC recharged.  Perris is in a part of California where even the rocks get sunburned.

The ATHS show mixes pick-ups and delivery vans with big rigs, fire apparatus, and old military trucks.  Also mixes working vehicles, daily drivers, loving restorations, goofy hotrod conversions, and a few like the hearse - hopeful but a little distance from being welcome in the neighborhood.

Mercedes relevance:  There were two Unimogs at the show.  Both drove in under their own power.  I'm very proud that my '81 300SD just rolled over 330,000 and is going strong.  But a lot of the big trucks at the show had SERIOUS mileage on them, enough to snicker at my 330,000.

Diesel relevance:  One fellow brought two Chevy diesel pick-ups.  One was a C-10, Task Force series, with a V-6, NA diesel.   He said it was a Chevy medium duty truck engine which was offered in the pick-ups for a short time, but found no interest.

The other was a C-20, 1980s vintage with a Detroit Diesel V-8 (8V61?), also a NA engine.  That one completely filled the C-20 engine bay.  Both were in very good condition, kept clean and pretty.

The railroad museum had two of its engines up and running for the day.  One was a 19th century, steam, mid-size mine engine from the Baldwin(?) works in Philadelphia, configured 2-6-0.  The other was a 1940s vintage diesel-electric, which dwarfed the steam engine.  The steam engine was also diesel fired.  They were running the engines up and down a straight section of track a couple or three miles long, up to the center of Perris.

About noon, something happened with the diesel.  It had a couple of old Southern Pacific passenger cars in tow, but an electrical problem made it impermissible to continue running it (some railroad regulation).  But with the track configuration at the museum, it was going to take too much time to switch the passenger cars over to the steam engine.  So, they just backed the 19th century steamer up to the front of the big diesel-electric, and had the steamer pull the whole rig for the runs up to Perris.

I confess that it was very nice to see the much older, smaller engine pulling the big engine and all the cars behind it.  Made me feel a little less old and worn out.

I spent the whole day in a LL Bean chamois shirt (heavy cotton) over a tee shirt.  I got home to find that my forearms are sunburned anyway.  Right through the cotton shirt.  Perris is hot and sunny.

It must be admitted that, even with the leaky exhaust headers the 1980 Caddy is a quieter ride on the freeway than the 300SD.  It is also much wider.  I am 6'2" and pretty much overweight.  But I find myself wallowing around in the Caddy.  The Benz seating is much better.  But in the Caddy, there can be a pile of spare parts, tools, maps, drinks, snacks, etc. between the driver and passenger, without either person feeling cramped.

The ride quality and driving "feel" of the Caddy do not approach the Benz.  Neither does the mileage!

Tom

This is the FREE Hearse I got this year , we're up - fixing it for a camper and shop truck .

It carries CHEESE nicely ! .

:

! FUNGUS ATTACK !

Or , I can't push a dead Mercedes W-123 uphill...... .

Last night the car began missing and stalling , I knew it was smurf in the fuel system but it was too cold to take a Diesel Bath this AM so I chugged on over to Bean Town and on the way home , the car sputtered to a stop in front of two busy Korean Chuches , it was a slight up grade on a corner , I coasted 1/2 way 'round the corner and stopped dead in the red zone , no way to move it so I changed my shirt and popped the hood & got busy .

The primary fuel filter I just installed Friday morning , was jammed up tight with a dead black jelly like substance ~ ! FUNGUS ! I removed it keeping it full of fuel and shook it , tapped the sides to shock loose a lot of crud and chunks etc. but when I blew it out backwards , the screens remained full of fungus jelly.... I got my Mity-Vac out of the trunk and used it to fill the filter again and repeated the shake ,shake , shake , tap tap tap dance , _still_ no joy ~ each time I blew the coffee colored fuel out , lots more hard red & black chunks blew out but the jelly stuff remained in place .

I re-filled it one last time and re-connected the IP end , cycled the glow plugs and held the throttle to the floor and cranked the starter untill I was concerned it'd melt or the battery would go flat (luckily it's a new battery) and after an eternity , or maybe three minutes , it _finally_ began running on all 5 cylinders and I was able to release the key , after a block of chugging along @ 20 MPH it suddenly cleared out and drove on home .

The Korean people who had to walk around my junk to get to Church ,

were all very freindly and said ' ! good morning ! ' .

Once home I jacked up and blocked the right rear corner of the car and grabbed all three clean drain pans and a stubby # 2 Phillips , the toolkit 19MM open end wrench and my 46MM 6 point socket on a long extension with ratchet .

when I disconnected the fuel hose , only a tiny dribble of fuel came out , validating my suspicions of fuel starvation .

I tried to loosen the 19MM nut holding the fuel hose onto the fuel tank screen , no joy , it wouldn't budge so I slipped a 19MM box end wrench up the hose to the nut and gave it a mighty heave and the entire tank screen began to unscrew , oddly , little fuel dribbled out until it came off whereupon 4 + gallons of the nastiest Diesel fuel I've _EVER_ seen , came roaring out the hole soaking me , the final drive , the driveway , my dog , the tools , the big pile of rags I'd carefully had at the ready to staunch spills and oh yes ~ some got in the drain pans I was holding up as close as I could.....

The InTank fuel screen was completely covered up with 1/4" thick slabs of the jellied fungus , I was able to get it all off by tapping the filter sideways before it dried off , then the rest of the chunks and dirt etc. was easy to clean .

I stopped at this juncture and cleaned my hands , took some digital pictures just as the camer's batteries died , I'll make a folder of pix and how it looks under the car , later .

After the cleaned screen was re-installed , I used clean felt , towels and so on as strainers when I poured the Diesel fuel back into the tank , there was so much jelly flotsam and dirt in it , the filter medium kept clogging up and I changed them several times before I was able to get all 4 remaining gallons in .

I remove the primary filter under the hood and tried cleaning the jelly out , brakleen , nothing touched it so I replaced the primary filter and de-greased the engine compartment , the driveway , me and so on , took off my oily shirt and fired it up , it ran smoothly and no visable smoke so I headed off to the $1.99 Chevron station and tanked it up , now I _desperately_ need to dump in a bottle or two of fungus killer then go to the beach and buy some more Startron as this thing is O.K. for now but there's still fungus in there and I need to kill it before it gets a chance to re-grow again .

The car now has much more low end power , still not enough to risk humiliation by a Tenn. Hillbilly Hot Rod but plenty good enough for my needs .

Thanx for reading this weighty tome , I hope it is helpful to those who will someday have a similar episode and know : you DO NOT need to call a tow truck !

.

These cars are GREAT ! .

I have been given a 1980 Caddilac Fleetwood Hearse.......

It's an unrestored original car that's rust free , being a California car and all .

It's filthy and a bit tatty but no dents and fair original black paint I think will polish up nicely .

As I cannot work on it at this time (I'm still FUBAR and in pain 24/7) my brother has decided to take it and foot the bill as long as I do the leg work and parts finding , lining up the mechanics to work on it , so on and so forth .

Anyone here know about these fine cars ? .
